The bind in Bihar: the challenges ahead for Nitish Kumar (बिहार में गठबंधन: नीतीश कुमार के लिए आगे की चुनौतियां)

Nitish Kumar may find it hard to avoid a choice between power and principle (नीतीश कुमार को सत्ता और सिद्धांत के बीच एक विकल्प से बचने में मुश्किल हो सकती है)

An alliance forged out of immediate self-interest as opposed to shared, long-term goals allows only for fleeting moments of togetherness (साझा गठबंधन के विरोध में तत्काल स्व-ब्याज से जुड़ी एक गठबंधन, दीर्घकालिक लक्ष्य केवल एकता के क्षणभंगुर क्षणों के लिए अनुमति देता है). The very same high-risk political strategising that drove Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar into the arms of Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad is now forcing him to hurriedly disentangle from the tight embrace (बिहार के मुख्यमंत्री नीतीश कुमार को राष्ट्रीय जनता दल के प्रमुख लालू प्रसाद के हाथों में लेकर बहुत ही उच्च जोखिम वाले राजनैतिक रणनीतियों के चलते अब उन्हें कड़ी मेहनत से उतरने की इजाजत देनी पड़ रही है।). Slowly, but surely, Mr. Kumar is building pressure on Mr. Prasad’s son, Tejaswi Yadav, to step down as Deputy Chief Minister following CBI searches that point to him being a beneficiary of political corruption (धीरे धीरे, लेकिन निश्चित रूप से, श्री कुमार, लालू प्रसाद के बेटे तेजस्वा यादव पर उप-मुख्यमंत्री के रूप में पद छोड़ने के लिए दबाव बना रहे हैं, सीबीआई इस बात की जांच करती है कि उन्हें राजनीतिक भ्रष्टाचार का लाभार्थी माना जा रहा है।). But there are limits to the room for political manoeuvre available for Mr. Kumar. A three-way contest will work to the advantage of the BJP, and the party would much rather look forward to a mid-term Assembly election than serve as a crutch (आधार) for the JD(U). At present, there is little Mr. Kumar can do other than to hope that the RJD would oblige (मजबूर करना) him by agreeing to the axing (संक्षिप्त करना) of Mr. Yadav. Mr. Kumar might risk leading another political churning in Bihar, but that certainly is not his first option in the current crisis (श्री कुमार को बिहार में एक अन्य राजनीतिक मंथन का खतरा हो सकता है, लेकिन निश्चित रूप से वर्तमान संकट में उनका पहला विकल्प नहीं है). There is too much at stake (दांव पर बहुत अधिक है), but sadly for him the RJD knows he has more to lose than gain by standing on principle (लेकिन दुर्भाग्य से उनके लिए राजद जानता है कि सिद्धांत पर खड़े होने से उन्हें लाभ की तुलना में अधिक नुकसान होता है).
